Are We More Interested in Others?

Dale Carnegie Quote

“You can make more friends in two months by becoming interested in other people than you can in two years by trying to get other people interested in you.”

– Dale Carnegie

First published in 1936, Dale Carnegie’s ’How to Win Friends and Influence People’ is considered the first Self-Help book. He described it as an ‘action-book’. I think I like that term better.

I wonder if during Lockdown the number of people you interact with via social media has increased or decreased. I suspect it has increased. Do you have a wider audience? Are you now connected with people who are outside your normal family, work, hobby circle?

And I wonder if this is because we are now more interested in other people. (That’s probably the wrong way to put it.) We now have something in common with other people and we are now more interesting to them. (Again, that’s probably the wrong way to put it.)

I do think this is a time when we are interested in other people because the lockdown has given us a shared experience. Learning how others are coping with it is interesting.

If this shared experience helps us to realise that we are more similar than different to others, then it may be at least one good thing that comes out of it. -HFBKBU
